Post New solder station
I know weve been here before but my new old Weller has died I think.

It owes me.nowt.

I see solder stations available at very low prices but I am wary of buying either rubbish or uncomfortable irons...i build a lot and so does my son.

I see some irons advertised as "for lead free". .is there a difference??

Anyone care to recommend a good iron (cheaprr than Weller!)

I love Antex Irons and my daily driver is an XS25 with silicone lead
I have a couple tips for it.
Sometimes I leave it on for hours at a time and a quick wipe of the tip and retin
and it's ready to go.

Two tips I use the most are
B005160 #50 chisel tip
B005560 #55 conical fine tip
I got those two tips when I bought the iron and the plating is as good as new on them still

https://www.antex.co.uk/products/precis ... rons/xs25/

I also use a small weller 15w iron for very fine work and a sealy 80w jobbie to reheat me cup of tea

Cant stand lead free solder, it just does not flow right and I sometimes wonder if its the cause
for dry joints on modern equipment , 60/40 all the way for me.

I have had one like this for 7 years now. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/60W-Professi ... SwlGtbW7M5
Three memories, which is extremely useful.

Bits are standard and cheap, I have calibrated it once since I bought it, ans have not needed to change the element.

Heats up in 20-30 seconds, and quicker if you let it idle at 200C when not using it.

The appearance varies, but just note the three buttons, all versions have them and the same markings.

I also have a combined iron/heat gun, digital displays but rotary controls, lots of them on ebay. Total crap! Temperatures all over the place.

Forgot to mention, I have quite a few Antex, excellent, but all been in the drawer or toolbox since I got the one above.

I'll vouch for that, same iron as I use, not a Precision Gold label on the front though. Idles quite safely at 200C, and ramps up to target nice and quick. Add some extra tips and it's good for most purposes. Like everyone else though, I have a tea warmer for heavier jobs.

Fix your Weller !

Whatever you get next will be a disappointment.
Mine was a, ahem "leaving present" from Plessey 40 years ago... and yet to find anything to replace it.

The Weller prices make me.sick.

Forty quid at least for the element...then the new size barrel, a fiver for the retaining nut...

BIG ouch

I have had one of these for several years now on its original element, has to be the best one on the market for the money and is priced very well.
We would all love to be kitted out with Weller, Snap-on, Dremmel, HP and Racal-Dana but the reality is that most of those "brand names" are for professional use, we don't require such precision in our radio and electronics hobbies.

The Maplin Precision Gold series has been perpetuated after the closure of the Maplin business, just look for the same iron under a new label, but try and grab a used one as a spare when they pop up on Ebay.

I also have a second soldering station which I keep a big chisel tip in for large surface area soldering such as MOSFET power devices, completely different machine but equally as good and share the same size, low cost tips.

None of mine cause QRM, that said I am sure if I hooked up a short antenna to the Spectrum Analyser and placed it near by the Iron we might see some noise down in the grass.
