Post Weatherproofing pl259 ?
Got my high quality usa made electrical tape which I will carefully wrap a good few turns over the pl259 plug and a good few inches off the coax below it to prevent rain / corrosion etc off the plug.anything else worth putting over the tape to aid weatherproofing ?

Does anyone still use the rubber weather boots over there coax / connectors just wonder how they compare to the tape method ?

Cheers.
John

Self amalgamating tape on the coax, and Tectyl 506 on the threads and cerntre pin, then over the outside after tightening.

Shiny new years later at the coast.

To be honest, I avoid PL259s, particularly outside.

Wrap all connectors in self amalg, taking care to ensure that the pull that the stretched tape exerts is such that it tightens the connector, rather than loosen it.
Tape over the top with PVC, if it's a long term connection. Most connections, in an amateur situation, aren't long term. We mess around with stuff too often for that. :D

Cheers

Tony

I use self amalgam too, but I've got a few outside with nothing added and they haven't let a drop thru in years. Good plugs 259s

Self amalgamating tape first...then some "Liquid Tape" from SotaBeams... excellent stuff...like a brush-on Self Amalgam....
Incidentally...a good source of Self Amalgamating tape is your local Screfix.

I use self amalgamating tape first and wrap that with Denso tape. You need gloves to use that but it is very waterproof.

Don't forget to tighten the PL259s using good pliers. Half your connection troubles will be due to them coming loose, as the outer connection is a pressure fit rather than a constant impedance sliding fit.

Use N-Type if possible, they're inheritantly waterproof. (I know this may not be the answer you're after though.)

That's how we cover spliced cables for underwater use. Two layers of self-amalg, followed by two layers of Scotch 88 tape. Each layer should overlap the one under it. It doesn't let the water in at -1000 Metres, so should be OK in your back garden.

Been using this Pro type of PL connector for a while. Easy to install on cable, said to be waterproof. Then one layer of electrictape (to protect connector from selfam. in next layer), selfamalgating tape and finally one more layer of electrictape to UV protect. Never had a problem and when cutting it up, the innerlayer of electrical tape leaves the connector clean from sticky selfamalgating residues.
