Hi, Its the first time I have actually owned a transceiver with 6m capability (ftdx3000) and also had an antenna up with 6m capability (albeit a hexbeam). Is there anyone on SSB on 6m, had a listen the last few days but nothing at all. Would be nice to work some stations as my noise level is absolutely zero.

Usually quieter, at this time of year, as some people seem to think that there's no propagation outside the ES season and take their antennas down.
Strange that some of my best DX has been in the winter. :D

The 6M group run a winter "contest" for members.
Membership is only Ā£10 and provides lots of help, and information, about the band.
Quote:
UKSMG Winter Marathon Event
The Winter Marathon runs between the first day of December 2017 and the last day of January 2018 on the Six Metre band.

Further information can be found on the UKSMG Winter Marathon page, and the full rules are available on the UKSMG Winter Marathon Rules page.

As well as the usual CW, and SSB, activity which can at times be sporadic, there's a high level of MS, and EME, which keeps the band active.
In fact, it seems quite busy this morning.

One thing about MS.
Read up about operating practices, and listen for a while, before going on as getting the timing incorrect cand frustrate you and annoy others. :)

However, outside the ES season, you might find it a struggle with 10W.
Particularly if you've just a basic antenna.

This coming Wednesday id the 6M UKAC, a good time to try things out and get a feel for what's possible.

I think you'll find the contest is Thursday, not Wednesday.

It is indeed.
Multitasking not working today, distracted by the thought of digging snow!

Cheers

Hi Colin
If you have a data interface on the radio you may want to try some meteor scatter using msk144.
There is currently a meteor shower that peaks on the 13th, there's a lot of activity on 50.280
As well as the UK Six meter group, I'd recommend you look on the 4M/6M KST Chat. It contains a lot of active stations who would be happy to try working you.
I know quite a few stations who find good success with 100W or less and 2el antennas.

I thought the UKAC Contest was on Tuesday evening this week, if not maybe someone will correct me.
73 and have fun on the magic band

Since the start of the year the 4M and 6M contests have been on Thursdays to coincide with the Nordic contests.

Cheers Tony, with luck I'll be on. Should still be some decent ms activity Thursday as it's not normally a sharp peaked shower.

Although I don't think the lucks with me today - stuck in Portsmouth waiting for delayed ferry after battling the snow down the M4.

Due to arrive home about 3am, think I'll wait until the morning to see what the state of my aerials is like

Fairly serious snow here.
Antennas need a bit of a shake.

Cheers

I bet it's fun with you, we had 3" when we left at 9am apparently it's hasn't stopped yet in Chepstow.

As for shaking, it's what I have been most worried about since leaving home a few weeks ago. I used a 10mm wall stub mast but what with the recent storms it might not have been such a good idea to try a stack on 6

At least I'm now on the boat and just waiting to get going, I could have been one of those poor souls that ended up running aground in Calais :amen:

Yep that's me: not "no propagation" at all, just no propagation to get excited about.

I suspect your best winter DX has been in solar maximum years? Now we're near solar minimum there'll only be the odd bit of single-hops Es and MS about in winter.

Apology guys I honestly thought I had replied to your suggestions. I have not got a data interface and really only wanted to use SSB. I will just keep looking at the band and hopefully manage to make my first qso on 6m.
