Post MA-5B or TGM MQ 36SR
Hi i am currently using a Cushcraft MA-5B antenna, and am planning to change to a TGM MQ 36SR, gain figures on the TGM are better than the MA-5B and it also has a smaller footprint, i know that the TGM has a pretty narrow bandwidth but i can live with that, i just wondered if anyone had used both antennas and would like to hear opinions on both items.

Thanks
Damien

Hi Damien
I have had both and I would rather use the ma5b the tgm was narrow and I didn't like it to be honest the performance wasn't great, others may like the tgm as opposed to the ma but personally contact wise and narrowness give me the ma5b.
I had the hybrid 2 element one 3 bands if I remember correctly.

I had an MA5B and it was ok (crappy) but a chap locally had the 2 element TGM in the clear at the same height as mine and that was poor going by the amount of fluffed contacts and his lack of success when calling CQ... the Moxon I went on to use next ran rings around the MA5B albeit it was only three bands.

Get an Hex if the wife and neighbours will tolerate its bulk that will be a real improvement over the Cushcraft and hopefully you've forgotten about the TGM now. :this:

Cheers, Dave.

Hex beam the best and when their up in the sky their not as bad as what you vision or I don't think they are, my next move will be to go back to the hex.

I would be sceptical about TGM's claimed gain figures.

The figures are confusing because the claimed reference is a dipole at 20ft over real ground. If the claim really is that it's 7dB better than a dipole on 15m, and 6dB better on 20m etc, it's outperforming a 3-el monoband Yagi!!

Yes the gain claimed by TGM is impressive, i would love to hear from someone using this antenna to see what there opinion is. there has to be someone out there using the TGM MQ 36SR 3 element

"Unbelievable" is the word I would use

That doesn't make it a bad antenna - just don't buy it on the basis of those exaggerated figures!

TGM are that popular mine bought in 2009 had been wrapped in 1994 Canadian news paper
If you can pick one up secondhand go for it please don't fork out for a new one.

I bought the 2 element with the super dupa reflector at the rear aound £500+ I must had been richer back then  It was great on 15 but 20 and 10 seemed a bit of a struggle, the 3 ele will be better but my experience with that one was average and for £500 it should be good but back then I was a little wet behind the ears.

I don't know many on HRD that currently use the TGM MQ36SR , but Tim M0URX and G3UCQ did, I think even Ant MW0JZE used a TGM but not sure what model it was. Edit, think an HRD mod/admin used a 3 element tgm?

I'm not sure there's many that had both the 3ele TGM and MA5B, so personal experience comparisons are going to be very rare... most choose one or the other, stick with it or move on to a hexbeam.
