Post Advice on the best wire antenna to a static caravan
Hi
Advice on what would work best for me on 40m and possibly 80m.
I live in a static caravan with a metal heavy corrugated steel roof
It measures 35ft x 15ft approx giving obviously around 100ft rectangular
I'm unsure wether any antenna will work on the roof
I thought if I had say 2ft plastic pipes fit to each corner.could I create some type of horizontal loop maybe wire beam
I'm thinking of stealth
Reason being my two 11mtr long fishing poles don't look great protruding the daytime skyline with a g5rv between them

All help appreciated

Have you tried a simple vertical wire up your 11mtr fishing pole, using the steel roof as a ground plane? You could base load it for 80m.

For local stuff ( inter G and EU ) I found year after year a simple random wire out the window to a nearby tree/pole and fed against the caravan itself worked very well for me 40 m

I also used the tow hitch to mount a 10 foot pole with a vert antenna on it and used the hitch as earth ,I used to use an old MFJ tuner at the base outside and run the coax from that into caravan also worked well and kept feeder mismatch losses minimal . only down side was re tuning for other bands but once marked took a few mins only .

Dear m6,

Have a look here...

http://www.arpoc.org/content/135-multib ... -easy.html

Itsa design I worked on two years ago, Im still using it as are others and still getting good results. G0AYD used his the other day, on 5 watts, and worked JA. I cant promise you JA but it's cheap, effective and reasonably stealthy.

Post Re: Advice on the best wire antenna to a static caravan
2 or 3 years ago when I started to try and improve on my snake oil all band vertical, M0JHA said that an end fed works well, and would answer my needs.

After trying many antennas that will fir in my space, I have found that an end fed gives the best results. (I don't listen until I try it :) )

My present on is an "inverted L" and 20m down (or up in wavelength) is beats everything else I have tried.

I would suggest a 25-30' pole with the feed point at the bottom, then the end on a shorter pole or convenient tree.

I have tried 4:1 and 9:1 ununs, but for my total length, a 5:1 unun works best.

So have the wire, and some different ununs to try.

I don't have a counterpoise or radials, though my ladder lying down connected does help on some bands.

Also use the coax as part of the antenna, with a few clip on ferrite's about 25' from the feed point (move them to try). Then the internal tuner would/could tune all bands 160-6

Yes Steve, the random wire is a good unit for sure. I also use about 43 feet of wire, give or take a snap and fix here and there, a balun (as per my vertical design) and it usually works very well. Not sure what the presence of the van would do though, but thats half the fun.

Either way, the OP has a few ideas to go with!

Apologies to the OP for the hijack but cheers for that Dave. Had a T106-26 from an old pc psu so knocked one up tonight. Pity the propagation was naff so no chance to test properly but it tuned up on all bands (up to 80) just fine

Cheers.

about 6 years ago I purchased this SRC X-80 was told it did the job need no radials.
Been sat in the shed for some years reading this post thought I wonder whats inside the box.
Is there anything useful I can use apart from the SO 239. I don't know what the core is only
its brown with Outside Dia 3290mm Inside Dia 1930mm Thickness 1140mm.
Trifalar 9 turns as can be seen... So am I correct in thinking this is 9:1 UnUn ?
Any use with a long wire if so how long is reccomemded?

It's a 9:1 Unun.

The core is a T130-2 iron powder toroid.

A core of over three metres is much bigger than anything I have seen, though it does look like a 9:1, even if very big :)
