how stupidly big do you want to go, and what is the planned usage?

there are BIG dual 5/8 colinears, consensus says they're no good for 'mobile', as the flex/movement and therefore signal degradation outweigh any improvement in gain.

Diamond M285 would be my recommendation.

If your not careful you can end up with a narrow radiation pattern, and an angle of radiation that makes a large vertical, despite the "gain", unsuitable.

We have visit this a few times. http://www.hamradiodeals.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=56149

I tested a few at range and local with a local ham, results in there somewhere, I think as a rough conclusion big and expensive makes little difference.

I've compared a simple quarter wave from Panorama costing under £20 including mount and coax to a 5/8 wave and a Diamond NR770 dual bander and the big 7900. I noticed absolutely no difference whatsoever to a repeater 55 miles away.

The topography in this country is such that other than other than in East Anglia there is bugger all advantage having a high gain antenna and a 1/4 wave will do the job just as well.

hi john , long time no hear hope you are well , a few years back one of the lads took out a bunch of antennas for 2/70 and a couple of monobanders for 2m
i sat in the shack and just made notes of signals one antenna after the other think we tested around 9 antennas in all and the grand winner was ..the watson W 770HB
it won hands down and i think it was the cheapest of the bunch , the most expensive was just bought two days earlier for £68 , im sure the watson at that time was about £16 , so if thats the one you have keep it if not get one they are still under £20 up the road ... catch ye later .. ray
