Post flex 3000 fire wire to usb help needed
hi all, just got my flex 3000 only to find out I cant hook it up to my laptop, due to fire wire lead,i only have usb ports, went to maplin to try and find some sort of converter, but was told there is none, asked if I could fit one of those card things with firewire ports again told me no due to the small size of the card reader on my laptop, anyone know how to get this hooked up to a lap top with just usb ports, just one thing im no good with pc/laptops, my laptop is a hp pavilion g6,if that helps,so if you know anything please let me know in layman terms, cheers tigger

You cannot as far as I know run a firewire via a converter as the firewire system is totally different code to that of USB data transfer. You will need a firewire card which I think may be difficult to fit to the laptop.

The only option is the PCCard to FireWire if your laptop supports it , or the thunderbolt to FireWire

Is all depends of the laptop model and age , unfortunately HP G6 doesn't have any of them

Hi,

Congrats on the Flex 3000 - they're superb once you've had a play setting it up.

It really needs to be dedicated FW anything else might cause timing or other issues.

The express port cards work fine if you laptop has a slot for one - or even onboard support but without it you'll need to get another machine, a scan on a popular auction site shows several with built in bits that'd work OK.

PSDR needs some nuts so some old P4 celeron lappy won't cut it. Core 2 Duo at least.

However you could for £2 take a punt on item 150938131698 and see if it did anything if not at least you'd know it was er **** :-)

Tigger, you'll not want to be using an old PC unless it has a fair bit of grunt.

http://kc.flexradio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50063.aspx

I'm selling a laptop on here with firewire, an ATI graphics card, a CPU with 3MB of L2 cache as recommended and which has a fair amount of go.... ;) You'd just need to buy a 6 pin to 4 pin Firewire 400 cable which are a few quid. It also has an Expresscard slot if the onboard Firewire isn't good enough.

In regards to the Firewire to USB converter, even if there was one it wouldn't work with the Flex 3000/5000. The whole reason they used firewire on those and not USB is because of some of the limitations of USB (not speed related).

It would run it, but i would say that the laptop Connor is selling is faster, and cheaper, it's not all about processor speeds

That particular boat may have sailed. I have another T400 but I intend keeping for myself for a shack laptop. Got a Dell Precision that I need to get round to getting ready that would do the job though but when you're leaving home at 5pm and getting back at 6-8am 5 days a week the last thing you want to do is start doing computers so its on the back burner.

Quite interesting looking at CPU benchmarks though and seeing that a lot of the Core i3 and Core i5 stuff isn't actually any quicker than the half decade old Core 2 Duo stuff it replaced.

I used a £20 card from Maplin, PCI and worked fine - never gave a days trouble with my 3000. Don't assume all cards and all PCs won't work properly - as long as DPCs are low then you'll be fine.

I had a semi decent TI card from eBay and that was worse than the cheap one from Maplin, so I stuck with what worked.

To really kill DPCs get an SSD and toss out that old spinner!

Ok first things first, go into the device manager and select your firewire card and select the card then follow these prompts:
1) Right click on the card and select update driver software
2) Browse my computer for driver software
3) Let me pick from a list of devices on my PC
3) Select OCHI 1933 compliant host "Legacy"

This sets the card up as the main a legacy driver as the firewire system is rather antiquated in modern PC operating systems and may not work unless you run it as a legacy driver.

Next uninstall PSDR 2.7 and reinstall the driver as a total fresh install, remember DO NOT turn on the Flex until all the drivers have installed as this will cause a conflict. When you have done this then start up the FlexRadio and the drivers should install fine. From this point on wards you should be able to start PSDR and run the Flex.

Let me know how you get on.

John

For the life of me I an not remember what its called but have you run the little setup tool for the fire wire driver that can tell you how good the connection is, its one of the tabs on the driver icon. It could be that you have the connection set too fast, try a less aggressive connection setting.

Also what colour i the fire wire cable, if its like clear gold colour which is the original supplied by Flex I had loads of trouble with this I would suggest that you try another.

Also if its trying to update that would suggest that the firmware in the Flex is older than the PSDR you are running on the PC and if too old may not upgrade in one step.
