Hiya Dave

Really it depends on what you want to do with the fishing pole. For example, do you want the pole to be the antenna itself i.e. by winding wire around it in a helical manner? Or do you want the fishing pole merely to act as a support e.g to hold up say an inverted L antenna?

Also, what bands were you thinking of using it on, and can you run out counterpoise wires or set up an earth mat etc?

The more info you can give about where it will be used, what bands and so on, the better we can answer your question.

Mark.

One or two salient points missing from your post , I'm afraid !!!!!

Which TYPE of antenna are you planning ?
Which band(s) are you going to use it on ?
What are the specs on your BALUN ?

Long story short... you are after a fibreglass pole !
Wire, anything really - as long as its copper... you can use other materials, but id stick with good old Cu.

You must not use a balun for this application; you need a 4:1 or 9:1 UnUn. To keep things simple use a fibreglass pole with wire taped to the outside, or fed up the middle. For 40m and 20m, 40ft would be a good length, but anything longer than 25ft will work OK.

If you've used an Inverted-L, I wonder why you want to change to a "fishing pole antenna"?

If your after one of the pro whip type verts with the transformer at the base I would just buy one if you havn't got a "JUNK BOX " for the bits to make one and a pole at hand . I think they are £40 ish so by the time you have paid for the pole ,core, wire, box to house tranny in plus post you would probably be better off buying one ..

If you have a pole you could always re wind the balun into an unun I suppose and it not cost anything ..

below is a tranny used on those type of antennas ..

I think it's a type 2 .. T??-2

Not sure if this is the correct core to use as I have seen them with FT??61 cores ..

Wasn't sure of the core size as I only use the T50's most of the time ...

Why not use a "balun" like this?

You don't need the bottom connection that goes to the coax shield.
With a 23' vertical it will give you less than 3:1 from 80-6, mostly better than 2:1.

And easier and cheaper than a fishing pole, use an old CB 5/8, take out the coil and put the balun in its place.

Or you could put 23' of wire on both screw terminals and have an all band dipole.

Only small hands ,and the wife did comment it makes things look bigger than they actually are :) it's more like T100 defo wasn't a 200 .
