Post Sirio SY4 Yagi, dimensions for 10m use
Hi all,
I was going to build my own yagi for 10m use, but as usual work gets in the way, so I have just ordered a Sirio SY4, I know a while ago when I considered buying one there was a good post giving the eli length for 10m use, but try as I might, I cannot seem to find it, so can anyone please give me the dimensions I need?
Thanks in advance
Geoff mw0ati

I've tuned mine to resonate around 28500 and here are the dimensions. As a rough approximation, each element comprises 3 bit of interlocking aluminium, just shorten the outer (8mm ally) one by 4 inches. No need to alter the element spacing. Tunes to roughly 28.5MHz so a slight SWR rise down in the CW segment but not excessive.

Element Lengths

reflector 8mm section length 580
dipole 8mm section length 440
1st director 8mm section length 240
2nd director 8mm section length 90

Element Spacing (no need to change)

dipole to reflector distance 1500
1st director to reflector distance 2500
2nd director to reflector distance 4000

Gamma Match:

61cm from centre SO239 to clamp
22cm inner section exposed (should be mid-way on clamp)
15cm from end of tube

you will get a lot of different dimension from different people , just suck it and see

Hi Geoff,

Just bought one of these s/hand from an HRD member (thanks Paul!) and it's going to be scaled down & put up for 10m also.

Found the following dimensions which as far as I know Ian G0UWK uses to great effect on 10. These measurements originally were devised by G0TSM and used to appear on the Nevada website as far as I can make out (Maybe Ian can confirm?!):

Reflector, 5460mm
Driven Element 5200mm
1st Director 4890mm
2nd Director 4640mm

Design qrq= 28.300

Spacings not changed.

Hope this helps.

I currently use an A3s tribander 3 ele yagi on 10m which appears to work well - the Sirio will be an experiment and will go up at similar height to a3s to do some back to back tests.

Will keep you posted!

Hello Rich,
Yes those are the dimensions I used, the thing is still set up that way too.
Will be interesting to see the differences between that and your A3S, I suspect it will have far better f/b but lets see.
Have not heard from Geoff since he was looking for T&K the other week, to be honest I’d expected him to be qrv by now, doesn’t take him long to get sorted once he has made his mind up :D

Hi Guys,
I was going to drop you a text Ian for a test, built the antenna Saturday Morning and put it on an 8ft pole and just tied it to the washing line, I used diferent dimensions to yours only because you had to just adjust the smallest (8mm) ali tips,as I had no one to help me with the tape measure. The QRG is 28.500 and at only 8ft above ground I was given 59+20 into Gozo Island, so not that far but a good indication of whats to come.

I got some T and K's sorted so have put up the K part onto my excisting rawl bolts, but the trouble is, I have kindly loaned my SDS hammer drill and all the SDS bits to someone, but cant remember who, and no one is owning up, so will have to dig out another old hammer drill.

Now the dilema, I found a brand new lightweight rotator and that arived today, but I have also had my bid excepted on a Yaesu 400, that I will pick up next week, so do I use the brand new lightweight and keep the Yaesu for larger antennas or wait till I pick the Yaesu up and use that?, I do think I will put the lightweight up as Im seriously thinking of building a hexbeam, but got to do a bit more research yet.

Also really fancy of trying a Kenwood TS850, I have looked at some old adds on other sites and they seam to be around the £300 to £350 mark, would you agree this is about right if I can find one ?
Cheers
Geoff, soon QRV on 10m

Cheers for that Ian - hope to get a chance over the weekend to get the thing adjusted & put in the air..... having second thoughts on the "worth" of back to back tests as the sirio would have to go on same stub mast as a3s albeit 6' above it - bound to get significant interaction between the two antennas :(

May just take the a3s down and sling the sirio up in its place and become a 10m specialist like you Ian

Good luck with the Installation Geoff - I'll work you on good old back scatter soon I;m sure!

Rich

Post Re: Sirio SY4 Yagi, dimensions for 10m use
Finally got a few hours free after work yesterday and built the antenna up for 10m spec - had a fair bit of shortening to do from the preset element holes to achieve the lengths posted earlier in this thread.

I moved all outer (tips) AND all middle elements in "one hole" each (about 40mm each i.e. 80mm each side/160mm tip to tip) and was still about around 80mm too long tip to tip! So roughly (each element varied a little to achieve desired lengths) 240mm shortening tip to tip was required..... didnt expect such radical shortening so fingers crossed all works out!

Ran out of daylight yesterday so the antenna is going up today..... time constraints unfortunately mean that it is going up in place of A3S so no back to back tests :( & bye bye 15 & 20m hello a new improved 10m (hopefully)

Will keep you all posted & try & upload a few pics later...

Glad you finally got the antenna built, I just shortened the 8mm sections as per G0wck spec mentioned in this thread, the VSWR is perfect but its either the old FT77 being mean on the s meter as when most brit stations give the dx station 59, I only get them at approx 55 but full readable, so may be its just the s meter calibration on my old girl.

Goodluck with getting it in the air

Good stuff Geoff - I wouldn't worry to much about the RX - the proverbial 5/9 eh!?

Well I got mine in the air before lunchtime - using dimensions posted earlier to set gamma match SWR was 1.2:1 (on centre freq of 28.400) at first attempt so happy with that!

Only had a quick 10min tune around and first impressions are that this feels like a nice lively antenna - some massive +40db signals from the US and every frequency jam packed..... did a primitive F/B test RX'n Z24EA and was about 5 s points (5/7 -5/9 on front & 5/1 - 5/3 on back) so quite reasonable.

No contacts made yet as I had to go out for the day :(

Brownie points will be earned with my neighbours - looks nice and neat up there compared to the A3S :D

It looks good on the tower, I cant belive the build quality v the price, but if my memory serves be well, I seem to remember them having a square boom in the past ?.

I have mine mounted on the gable end of the bungalow, so not that high above ground level, but we are allowed 3m above the highest part of the house before planning is required. The mad thingh is, they gave me full planning for my 60 foot Strumech tower, but I had to get every antenna approved, so ok, I knew my Optibeam OB 11-5 would have to go, but they would not even give permission for my 23cm yagi, so this is my 2 finger salute to the planners

Now time to go bigger around a 30 feet boom length should do the trick :D

the Tagra AH-04 had a square boom, don't think Sirio's ever did.
