Re: weird noise on all hf bands
Have you tried a different receiver to rule out a fault in your rig?

Re: weird noise on all hf bands
An end fed 9-1 is possibly the worst antenna you could try in a noisy location mate, don't sell up but try some options. A loop would be better maybe a noise canceller like a X phase....magnetic loop....a balanced diople....loads of options to try. Where is the noise coming from?

Re: weird noise on all hf bands
End fed 9:1 here is S9 noise below 14Mhz, try folded dipole or loop configs.

Re: weird noise on all hf bands
You need walk around the hood and track it down, any specific questionsbands? If it's on the phone line move all antennas away and beams will help because you can point away from the noise so it's at the side or back. Early days track it down and what bands are affected, is their a sub station near? Is it on 24/7.

Re: weird noise on all hf bands
I'm just wondering if it's static buildup on the antenna, is it raining heavily at the time? This can happen if there is no DC path to earth, the vertical might not be affected because there might be a path to earth.

Re: weird noise on all hf bands
Is it possible the farmer recently installed an electric fence?

Re: weird noise on all hf bands
One way to prove it isn't static buildup is to simply connect a 5 megohm resistor from the antenna to ground and see if the cures it. It only needs to be raining within a few miles for static to build up. I have suffered with the problem a few times over the years till I add a resistor as a matter of routine now to all my aerials.

Re: weird noise on all hf bands
Don't write off verticals they can work really well ground-mounted out in the countryside, used several here very successfully . I gave up on end-fed wires years ago, just too much noise: verticals for the lower bands and resonant horizontal aerials for the higher bands.
RF noise in the countryside has been increasing. When I moved here it was really quiet on the bands, 15 years later there's a load of noise and I have no immediate neighbours.
