Post What's it all about?
In case you are wondering about the title, there used to be a regular section in RadCom, called "Four Metres and Down".
It was presented by Jack Hum, G5UM, and along with some local amateurs, was the thing that gave be an interest in VHF/UHF above other things.

Amateurs in the UK did not have 6M at the time, it was the home of BBC1 405 line transmissions, so VHF started at 4M, which had been allocated in the mid fifties.
The title refers to the Wavelength rather than the frequency, hence, down, in our case, from 6M.

I hope you will humour me in my moment of nostalgia.

The purpose of this section is to bring together all thing VHF related and, hopefully, encourage a few, who would not normally think of giving these bands a go.

Cheers

Tony

Now that brings back memories, G5UM - Uncle Mike.
Used to work him on 70cms from my old QTH.
Proper amateur, always had time for anyone who wanted to talk.
Think I may have worked him on other bands, will have to have a dig through the old logbooks.

Any one remember those vhf two letterers Eric G3JQ & Bill G3BW - are they still about?
4m & down did have a certain magic, I suppose it still does - I got a real buzz today working S51DI on a converted pmr & a wire dipole in the loft!!
Now where's that 6-40
Edit - incidentaly Tony, just found you in the log on 2m ssb 10/5/78

Found you there. :D
That books seen better days as it was in a garage when I had a leak years ago. :(
Another midnight QSO. Always some one on 2M SSB. Midnight with you 0638 with F6AGV. :D
I used to have regular midnight to 0100 contacts with PE0MAR and three or four other PA0s and lots of early morning QSOs before work!

I've had many QSOs with Ivan, including today, both SSB and FM.
He's one of the few FM contacts in the log.

Two letter calls - some really good old guys, Tom Douglas - G3BA - was in charge at Sutton Coldfield TV Station.
There was Len -G8ML, G6FK, G2UN plus many more VHF pioneers.

Cheers

Tony

Nice one Tony with this section.
Fond memories of Jack Hum, whom I met a few times in my club comittee days.
Although 6 down is not on from home, my interest is awakening, a nostalgia trip is on the cards having acquired a Liner 2 and a halo, my first commercail setup yonks ago, so if you hear a bit of splatter occasionaly I may be the culprit.
I wont be on for a while as I want to go through the Liner and give it a going over.

I've really let my self slip this year with 6m. I won the UKAC 6m (foundation class) last year, this year I've only done one contest, so no chance of defending my title :(

Your absence has been noted. :)

A note of explanation will be required in the future.

Cheers

The complexities of the English language. :D

I should have made it clear that it was the garage that leaked.
Not me.

Well they flooded our valleys so I suppose it's a reasonable swop.

Tony, firstly, Im very glad to see you have accepted the role of running this section of HRD. Its good to see the site developing and taking on the ever increasing diversity of the amateur licence. Im sure it will make John and Mick's load a little easier to deal with. I like the idea of area specific moderation - it removes the need for general ones whose personal interests and bias may make them less objective.

Secondly, it will help greatly to have a section specific to the VHF & UHF bands rather than delving through all the stuff in the general discussion secton.

Finally, I cant think of anyone better equipped or more knowledgable than yourself to do the job.

Good effort, Mick & john. An excellent move for the site.

Talking of the old days on 2 metres, what happened to Graham GM8FFX, the loudest signal from GM?
Tony must remember him.

I remember Graham well, always reliable for GM on 2, many an entry in the old log.
