Post tgm mini beam
hi, i have a tgm minibeam at my qth, on a 10m tannamast. works fine on the bands its designed for. however, i read something on the internet, that theese small beams work on 2m.
i have just purchased a ts711e multimode for 2m (collect on tuesday). i have checked the minibeam with the analyser. and it is ressonant on 2m, the swr is never higher than 1.4
just wonder if anyone has used this antenna on the 2m band ?

many thanks
thomas

When you say resonant are you going by just the SWR indication or including the
resistance and reactance as well?? A low SWR does not indicate resonance or
efficiency. The dimensions of the TQM do not lend themselves to 2m operation in the
same way that it does on the bands it is designed for and I'm of the opinion that all it is
doing is representing a load that your radio will not protest too much about, whether it
radiates the RF presented to it effectively is a completely different matter.

Once you receive your TS-711 it will be interesting to hear what results you obtain
compared to a purpose made 2m antenna.

Regards

hi nidge, thanks for reply, you are right ofcourse, the swr reading, does not mean it will radiate efficeintly. yes it was showing 50 ohm on the meter. i will have to see how it performs when i collect the radio.
just wondered if any one else had tried this antenna on 2m.

thanks
thomas

Before everyone rushes out to buy a TGM for 80m :) be aware that it's probably not the beam which is radiating. On 80m the feedpoint impedance will be such a high reactance that it will be impossible to prevent common-mode current of the coax feedline.

In other words, if you are getting results on 80m it's most likely the coax which is the antenna !
