Post Flex Radio 3000 & 5000A still a good buy?
I've been wanting a Flex 6400 but seems to be talking forever to be released. I'm just wondering if the Flex 3000 and the 5000A are still a good buy?

Thanks

If you have a PC with firewire - which you would need - both the 3000 & 5000 are good radios but not as good as the 6XXX series. The software, Power SDR for them is still being breathed on and many will say is more developed that Smart SDR for the 6 series.

I have a 6300 which I rate as superb, best radio I have ever had in nearly 60 years of playing radio.

Personally I would wait for the 6400 but if you are impatient, have a look at the 6300 - there's not a lot of difference in my opinion.

I have a well loaded 5000A and a 6300.
Both are very fine radios and I rate the 5000A as one of the best receivers out there.
I particularly like the plethora of in/output sockets on the 5000A something lacking in the 6300.
I find PowerSDR to be more useable than SmartSDR but that is subjective.

Also have a look at the software for the 5000A from KE9NS....more options even tha PowerSDR.

Can anyone tell me how easy it is to purchase the second receiver (RX2) or the ATU for the Flex5000, and where from?

I have never owned a flex 3000 or 5000 so cannot comment on them but most seemed to rate them. I have owned two 6300 and a 6500 over the last five years and rated them highly in terms of receive performance but the noise reduction and automatic notch filter were poor and underdeveloped. Random network disconnects and flex's inability to sort that or to speed up development of the software caused me to look elsewhere. There are similar issues with the 6400 and 6600 as well as an early hardware recall, so i am glad i gave up waiting for the 6600 to be delivered in europe.

I opted for the new anan 7000 with true dual rx and superb nr2 snb and anf facilities. The openhpsdr client software is very powerful and flexible and i have been very pleased with its receive performance as well as its pure signal pre distortion feedback clean tx signal. At £1000 cheaper than the 6600 and having proper antenna and beam steering diversity facilities it was a no brainer decision. Rock solid performance so far for lf dx and hf contesting. The open source hpsdr software has already moved on with two major revisions since i bought the radio in december 2017, and the software is free! Its at the cutting edge of sdr development but without the bleeding bit!
Worth a look as the price has just dropped a few hundred quid too in recent weeks.

Well I think that it depends if you care about your neighbours. The early model Flex radios have a serious TX design flaw. Look at this article from SM5BSZ.
