I don't think they were that long Nigel,
Slightly over inflated gain (NEC reckoned it was close to a 17 ele tonna) if memory serves me and very heavy.
According to the instructions it was 2.8wl, something like just over 18ft long.
My mum still uses bits off my old un to support plants in her garden, Can’t fault the build quality however.
Specs when run through NEC apparently are as follows,
2.8wl, 12.6dbd with one of the world’s poorest f/b of only 13.6db.
Tony has the instructions here, might have sent them to him at some stage years ago as I still have the stuff in my filing cabinet.

They were the "industry standard" antenna in the 70's for 2m DX.
Built like the proverbial brick outhouse, I lived in a very exposed spot & they survived some horrendous storms - worked some good DX too!
Enjoy :)

I also tried their "straight 10 & 8 eles as well as an 8 XY on 2.
All similarly well made but I'm told, not up to modern ants for performance.
On 70cm their 46 ele multibeam was another classic.
Enjoy :)

(why the double posts when I edit?)

Post Re: anyone know the gain on my jaybeam
My very first logbook back in 1986 was a Jaybeam logbook acquired from Poole Logic at the Leicester radio rally.
It has all the specs of the different Ariels that they made.
And my very first entry in my log was ..
28/7/1986 18:20 station opened.
And my very first transmission was to call G1PDF via GB3VT and I got no reply!
Back then you had to record when station opened and any calls you made whether you contacted anyone or not, all CQ calls had also to be logged.
It was a right PITA to be honest!
And the first person I spoke to was G1PDD Tony in Wolstanton and that was on s20 then moved to 145.400

So my late and dear Friend Steve G1PDF failed to be my first contact! Why? because he had gone carp fishing at Redmire Pool

Always fun to look back through old logbooks :D

well collected the brute its total length is 19ft 6 inchs and its not much weight than my 10 element did find some info on the web saying there is a early version and a late version. difference is size of elements so mine looks later as elements are 12mm not 15mm seems theres a few german vhf stations that use these a lot.
Are spares available for jaybeams as I stood on my 5 element that I was going to use portable and snapped the housing for the coax that goes to each element on the folded element everything inside is ok just took the corner off or shall I just changed the way the internals are mounted as im assuming parts are scarce.

Just ordered an antenna from Jaybeam. :D
I doubt anyone there would know what you are talking about, if you mentioned a Parabeam.
They're part of Amphenol now.
A far cry from when I used to visit the factory.

Cheers

Tony

I noticed from there website not a parabeam in sight same as it looks different than run of the mill aerials.
hopefully ill get it up this weekend to see if its any better than the f9ft 9 element I have up which I rate as mediocre at best.
on the 10 element I used to pick up a beacon in the low 144's not a noise with the f9ft so will see if it improves.

Hi,
I've actually got the Jaybeam Amateur Radio Antennas catalogue! so I have attached a scanned copy of the page with the LW8/2M information. That is if I've managed to upload the file. If anyone needs any other info from the catalogue then let me know.

I failed to upload the file - I suspect it's to big. Let me know if you want a copy and I'll email it to you.

Post Re: anyone know the gain on my jaybeam
All received, thanks... just a quick question if i may, i also had a 5 element 2 m yagi i used portable, the gain on that was 9.1 against the 9.5 on the 8 element jaybeam, does this mean that the 5 element would work aswell as the 8 element as the gain figures are very close, or are there more varibles ie boom lenght etc, lets say they both had 9.5db gain, but one was 5 element 3ft boom and one is 8 element 10ft boom, would they both work as well as each other i suppose is my question?

Thanks Gaz
