Post CHEAPISH SDR DONGLE ?
Hi All,

Thinking of buying a SDR DOngle to play about with, could be useful here and there for satellite down feed decoding.

So, I've seen that the RTL-SDR.com one is about 30-35 quid.

But there appear to be dongles that are may be exactly the same on ebay for about 16 quid. ( Just have to wait a while to get one )

Are they the same?
If not are they any good?

Didn't really want to spend much as it may only get used once in a blue moon.

Any advice appreciated.

Mark

The RTL one may seem expensive, but they have modified the unit somewhat via the manufacturer to improve upon the limitations of the normal SDR dongle. However, if SDR is your thing then I would look at the SDR play / AirspyHF+ offerings and try to source one second hand for a modest price increase over the RTL dongle as they are a world apart in performance. I have owned, modded and played with lots of SDR units and the cheap RTL dongles are very limited to the point of being annoying to use at times, in fact I have one in the bits box that never gets used as the pagers around here wipe it out through lack of filtering over a wide swathe of the frequency coverage.

I'm using one 24/7 as an aircraft radar receiver... Cost less than a fiver off the 'bay !
The ones that have ham radio on the box will have a 500% markup, because we are suckers... And maybe some filtering added, but if you just wanna get you feet wet, the cheap ones are astonishing good value.

Thanks guys.

This is what I needed to know.

I need one that has no input filtering so I can decide what needs filtering.
I will be using it to monitor pager, radar, mobile and broadcast signal strengths, so probably what everyone else wants filtered!
