After recently becommning involved in Dstar i figured HRD should have a section for it given the amount of people who actually use the method for communication.
I have learned so much regarding Dstar over the last few months in respect as to what it actually is and what it can offer within Ham radio.
Yes many will say it is not real radio, however i am looking at it as another mode and not a replacement for Hf or VHF/UHF .
For many it is a way to gain worlwide communication via the internet using a Handheld or dongle or both.
Either way its offerings are vast and hopefully this section will grow and help show how and what is in Dstar comms.

If you are already involved with Dstar feel free to share your knowledge and if your new to Dstar and stuck then ask and we can hopefully sort it out.
Share your dealings with Different Radios and how you found them to operate.

Maybe like me your delving into setting up your own gateway, share what you learned

I would like this section to grow like many other on HRD and become a good source of help and Knowledge regarding Dstar and im sure it will be over time.

I am in the "wait and see what Digital System is going to be the standard" camp. There are several systems around now, DSTAR being predominant at present. Instead of getting easier to make a decision it has in my view become harder For instance what system / repeaters would I be able to use with the Yaesu FTM-400? I take it that it isn't DSTAR compatible?

D-Star has been around for some time now and there are systems already in place! Why invent the wheel, You will always get hams buying new radio's just to see what they are like or what there missing! Now you have Icom! Yaesu! Motorola! ?? I think they will all be joined together later so they will work with each other..

I will be shortly joining the Dstar communication technology, never thought it would be something I would try but then again I never thought I would get into SDR either but I am currently active with that as well.

That's the problem, we don't know for sure that the various systems will talk to each other.

I'm new to D-Star, just purchased an Icom IC-7100.
Had some help from Simon 2E0SIA on getting it up and running.

I am totally new to this and am contemplating trying this mode using a dongle. Is registration to a repeater or to the network mandatory? I looked at this site: http://www.dstargateway.org/D-Star_Registration.html and searched for local repeaters but they all seemed to have a blank in the registration field! Have I missed something?

Advice please....

If you cant find registration options on your local repeaters use this.

As a 2 day owner of a D-STAR radio and evan after several weeks of reading and watching youtube help videos I am just starting to realise how much I don't understand about the mode :-)

That makes me very happy because I like to end at day feeling i have learned something and this mode is my latest challenge

Hi all, recently purchased a 2820 along with a Dvmega/Raspberry pi and shortly after the E92D. This has to be a huge step forward in the hobby. Some say its not ham radio but I would disagree and that's the opinion I am entitled to have.

Surely for those who have no way of setting up beams, towers, verticals and wires this is great because folk can chat and gain knowledge about the hobby.

I have tried to move away from the 2 meter side of the hobby due to idiots either licensed or not messing around on the Belfast repeater. I don't speak much on it but monitor it.

Great that you must register a call sign and the fact that you can be clicked off at any time. Yes I know that call signs can be hi-jacked as can most things these days.

Its another branch to be examined. Its a pity that all the major companies can not link up to use the system rather than trying to use it as a money making exercise.

I say long live this system I have the location for my antennas but as I have said for those less privileged this must be a God send.

Clearly, we are a couple of years on now and due to the recent push (and discount) by Yaesu, Fusion is taking off too.
However, I heard a QSO yesterday about some kind of usage of DMR technology within DSTAR.

Something to do with limitation of serial numbers or recognition numbers?

Having seen the first announcement of a DSTAR and DMR combined radio, surely this would push Fusion out?
I know that many emporiums are having lots of used DSTAR stuff sold to them though.

Any ideas where we are going or will we still be having this discussion in 2 years time?

It sounds like your talking about the new CCS7 version of the ircDDB Gateway ?
