Agreed. Those first couple of QSOs are terrifying.

Just remember that the fine gentlemen of FISTS and the SKCC both have volunteers who will patiently 'do you' the first few times on 80 or 40.

never had a problem in my early days with others having patience with my first faltering steps.

I got several emails form people I'd worked, encouraging me and pointing out that I was getting J & V mixed up etc.

the CW fraternity are a lot more gentlemanly than the phone mob

Why do people who have a zero in their call get so ratty if you send it as 'Daaaaaaaaaaaaaah'? :)

Because it sounds like you've died on your Morse key :D

I've heard a lot of stations using a long dah to indicate an error (instead of 8 dits), so it could cause a mix up (listeners might think you're correcting yourself).

Unless you have reams of numbers to send why use 'cut numbers' anyhow? It takes a little more effort on a straight key, granted, but it's an insult to the station you are working if you can't be arsed to put some effort in to sending his/her callsign as they send it.

If someone did that to me I'm pretty sure I would be sitting there thinking "lazy bas***" :D

Keep the long dahs for tuning up

I agree . It's just wrong ..

It's quite common saying 1TT for 100 and have heard it for other numbers ,20, 2T etc but never heard it in a call . I don't disagree with cutting numbers when used in the right place but in calls is just wrong IMO..

Yes.

I bought the narrow filter for my 817 and it transforms it. But CW filiters transform all rigs...the 706 is a different beast with a CW fitted too. You'll find it money very well spent.

Well done on your CW activities...keep it up! By and large your 20 watts is all you'll ever need; some pile -ups excluded!!! Then 300 watts and a beam would be nice!

Yes , as stated it transforms the rig ,it really does . I worked my 817 for a few years in denial I really didn't need one :) .Untill you have one fitted it's difficult to really appreciate it ..

billy

ps don't worry about using extra power when kicking off ,the more contacts when learning the better and if that means using your allocated amount to get them then do so ..

couldn't agree more. work what you work and have fun , worrying about what joe blogs can hear or work takes the fun away ..

I live in "sheltered accommodation for pensioners" and have a bit of wire thrown over the roof. Same colour as the slates and the Housing Assoc. SS Guard has never noticed. :) I'm always active on the CW portion of 40 for UK QSOs.
