Post Learning CW
So, I have bought a straight key and have been playing around sending CW to myself, the sending part seems much easier than receiving and although I can recognise some letters and strings I am still struggling to decode the letters and have to listen five or six times to a CQ call in order to get the callsign.

Any tips for learning on the job so to speak?

Cheers

Rob.

Carry on doing exactly what you are doing Rob, be patient because it doesn't happen overnight, you will find after a few weeks you will be copying the callsigns after 3 or 4 times instead of 5 or 6. The problem learning using a computer is that it sends perfect code, whereas in the real world you will encounter vastly different fists, noise and fading and you will find it difficult to adjust if you just learn from a computer, trust me, you will get there, as I said before, just be patient and don't give up.

First thing is stop sending. Until you have really learnt what good code sounds like all you will do is learn to send YOUR version of tje code.

Stop sending. Get listening. Ten to thirty minutes every day. Youll soon have it

Thanks for the tips lads.
Listening on top band although these boys are sending so fast it could be mistaken for MGM.

Agree with the last comment. Do not try to send before proficient at reading .
Various CW programs are available, eg G4FON and there is one called Morse Mouse, which may be useful

Once you have memorized the code read the paper road signs etc in your head making the letter sounds until no longer have to think about the letters

Not dot dash, dit dah.

Listen to code waaaay faster than your comfortable with... pick out the odd letter... eventually you will hear letters and not beeps !

My favorite quote on this is from the movie "Firefox" where freddy Jones says "you must think in Russian, you cannot think in English and translate..."

Fabian, DJ1YFK has a good site at https://lcwo.net/about

Further up the ladder, once you have an understanding of the code, it's worth getting on the CW Academy, run by the CWOPs club.
