As decoders go, nothing I have tried comes close to a Kantronics Field Day 2
Took me 15 years to find one in the UK though

cwget works very well on the PC.

Most of the ones you see on ebay etc. are pretty useless in comparison

The Telereader CD 670 is also fairly good, you need a good composite video monitor though, or a video converter.

I just use my ears, they don't need a PC, or a included PSU, or even a video monitor!
Pair of ears and at a push pencil and paper to jot it down, or just head read it and still get the bulk of the gist of what is being sent with a bit of practice, depending on how well it is sent of course.
No electronics involved other than the radio to receive it.
But then again shit sent morse reads as garbage on a PC program or specific clever dedicated CW reader, just the same as it can with your own ears at times.
You can't make a silk purse out of a pigs ear.

If your ears are bad try a tuned audio path decoder and blinking associated light, I had an almost totally deaf amateur friend many years ago, lost his hearing due to some weird illness, and I made him such a device, narrow band audio filter set around 700 Hz, with triggered fast response readout LED, and high and low audio filters driven LED's either side of that, for tuning and centring, and he read the incoming dots and dashes off the blinking centred LED light to a reasonable speed at that.

He could still send as well to a decent speed, could do the required 12 WPM, feeling his way with a manual key set with a reasonable contact gap and key spring tension and he could feel and judge the outgoing dots and dashes timing through his hand via the contact impacts.
True story honest, no bullshit.

But as a short fall I wanted to try a reader
So just wanted to see if any one could recommend one that works
Or a good PC program just to try for next few months while I have my ear operation

The only PC programs I have tried was a free down load called "CW decoder" a few years ago now just to see how good it was, it was OK, and also another program I can't even remember the name of now that did multi digital modes decodes called "Win" something or another, and included various modes like CW, RTTY, SITOR, AMTOR, and even POCSAG paging systems, but that was many years ago.

If you have a smart phone (pretty well anything with android on), there's a good decoder available for free.

It's literally called "Morse Code Reader" by Jacek Fedorynski.

No setup required, just download and install it on your phone, then run it! There's an option to keep the screen live all the time the app is running (so that your phone doesn't blank off).

I've been using it on and off for three or four years now on assorted phones and it always works like a charm. It uses the internal microphone in the phone to pick up the code, so just pace it anywhere in the vicinity of your speaker. The app uses a kind of AGC/threshold system, where a red line on the display indicates the average level of audio, and anything above that level is considered to be the code, so it works on volume level rather than absolute pitch of the CW tone.

Because I've been 'in to' Morse for many years I have accumulated a number of decoders, and this app by far and a way beats all of them for ease of setup and use.
