Post 11 year-old passes morse test
Morse code received a boost from the younger generation, on the 24th June 2020, when 11-year-old Ryan Morrison from Stillorgan, Co. Dublin took and passed his Morse code test.

Conducting the test were IRTS Chief Morse tester Dave Moore EI4BZ and Jerry Cahill EI6BT. Ryan was delighted to pass the Morse test after practicing for five months at twenty minutes per day.

Ryan is looking forward to sitting the radio theory test on 25th July in the Maldron Hotel, Tallaght and we wish him every success.

Do you know what speed (wpm) the test is conducted at, and what is the format of their test?

Thanks.

The speed is whatever you ask for, I found 12wpm easier than 5 so that was my choice. The format was blocks of numbers and the sending and deciphering from a page chosen at random, in my case the book was Moby Dick .... how the feck can you prepare yourself for that.

Does the speed at which you take the test determine what licence 'class' is issued, or is it a one size fits all deal, I.E. simply a pass or fail and the pass gets you a full licence?

Thanks again

No, regardless of speed a pass is a pass and the reward is the same, a 2 letter suffix, nothing else, all Irish amateurs share the exact same spectrum and power privileges.

You have a full licence after passing the theory the CW test just gets you a 2 letter call like Gerry's, he has no more bands or power allocations than I do with the three digit B call sign, the test is 5wpm but as Gerry said you can ask to take it faster but doesn't make any difference,
