Post Which radio - multi or dedicated 2m
Evening, I was licensed in 2010 (foundation then intermediate) and after moving house and having children, the radio quickly was sold and I have been off the air for 7 years. I'm now looking to get back into it and have a budget of no more than £500 and potentially a little more for the right equipment but ideally less. I am totally confused as to what to go for!

When I was getting into it, I was really enjoying the 2m /70cm stuff and slowly wanting to learn more about the digital side of things. I was working repeaters, 2m ssb, echo link /repeaters and even reading into working satellite. However, I did very much enjoy the occasional break of a HF DXing session.

I'm now starting from scratch (other than a little uv5r) and I'm so lost with what I should be looking for. Do I go for a dedicated 2m/70cm rig that will allow me to follow any of the interests listed above....if so, any recommendations?

Or do I blow my budget on a multiband with 2m/70cm included? Or maybe a high quality 2m/70cm setup with a cheapo HF rig to allow a little experimentation. I don't know if I'm being odd, but I've been off air so long that I would really like to experience those long range qso on HF, even though I know the buzz will probably quickly pass.

Help appreciated.

Many factors to consider, antennas, space for shack, future funding etc.

For that price you will be able to get yourself a decent 706 Mk2G and have a bit left over.

You may find an FT847 for that prices if you are prepared to be patient

Both will give you all HF bands & 6m,2m &70cm, and the 847 will also give you 4m

If you buy wisely, neither will lose too much value if you decide to concentrate on one aspect later.

There is also the 857, but it is not so nice to use as a base station rig, better mobile.
