Post 3000km Sporadic-E opening on 144 MHz
3000km Sporadic-E opening on 144 MHz from the Azores to Germany on 3rd June 2021
John EI7GL on his Blogspot at ei7gl.blogspot.com reports that there was a remarkable opening on the 3rd of June from the Azores in the North Atlantic to Europe when CU1AA, CU1AL and CU3EQ worked paths in excess of 3,000kms into Germany.

As reported by stations on the DX Cluster, the primary propagation mode was Sporadic-E. However, as the maximum range for one hop is in the region of 2300kms, so something else had to make up the additional 700 or so kms.

There are two possibilities. One was Chordal Hop Sporadic-E with a bounce going from Sporadic-E to Sporadic-E cloud. This would however require two intense areas of Sporadic-E at just the right spot to support 144 MHz propagation.

The more likely scenario was that it was one Sporadic-E with a tropo extension. The weather charts show high pressure over the Azores.

John also reports on excellent conditions on 50MHz on June 3rd when a 14,966 kilometre path between KG6DX on the island of Guam in the Pacific and EA8DBM on the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands.

On June the 2nd also on 50MHz John reports that the longest path worked was between the aforementioned EA8DBM on Tenerife and VK4ABW in Darwin on the north coast of Australia. That path works out at around 16,220 kilometres on FT8.

No doubt our Echo India VHF DXers had a ball during the past week

SV9 worked ZL on 6m this morning, and a bunch of VKs. Amazing, not heard of ZL being worked before on 6m Es, I was on KST chat at the time with both stations so it is legit.

Stations in the Med and similar southerly latitudes have been having some amazing long-haul Es on 6m, sadly up here in the UK the northern paths are really poor this year after 2 great years. Very little from Asia and central/west coast USA this year so far. A stark contrast to 2020.

It was FT8..

One of the great advantages of the mode is everyone being on the same frequency,it means openings like this get spotted whereas before it would have been very likely to have been missed.

That's whats kept me interested in VHF for 40 plus years

It constantly evolves but the crucial factor is having someone in the right place on paths that we already know might exist.

For example 25 years ago we knew EA8 was workable pretty regularly, and we knew that there was activity there.

What we didn't know at the time was the signals that were getting down to EA8 were also making it to D4 but there was zero activity.

25 years later along comes D4C on a fantastic site in Cape Verde and records start to get broken as the path is worked from G pretty much every year.

The same with the Azores..sadly the CU8DUB beacon is no more but when it was QRV it was heard pretty much every year.

Neil G0JHC has worked 5T on 4m I am sure others have but I'm not sure who the UK 4m big guns are, 5T5PA has an online log so stick a few calls in and you will see who else,
