Today is a red letter day, the solar flux has hit 100 for the first time this cycle.

To put that into context
- we've just come out of the longest solar minimum in living memory, where the flux was down in the 60s and low 70s for over 2 years.
- we've gone from there to here in a few months, and it's been fairly sustained these past few weeks.
- last solar max only peaked around 160.
- but previous solar max have been much higher e.g. Feb 1992 SFI=303

What is of interest to 6m ops is the steepness of the climb, as the best solar cycles in the past have been accompanied by a rapid rise from the previous minimum. The forecast for this cycle was pretty poor, just like the last one, but on the basis of what has happened since Sept this new cycle is looking pretty promising, with improved chances of F-layer propagation on 6m.

We'll have to see what happens over the next few months to see if this rise is sustained.
