Post 70cm contest query
Not having a clue about VHF contest rules but I wonder if anybody could clarify whether the use of the cluster is prohibited to illicit contacts?
I think I know the answer but I just wanted to clarify in case I was looking at the usual 'ancient' information!

Sorry Rob I meant to say self-spotting during a contest!

From the rules page.

Self-spotting on the DX Cluster network is not permitted during the contest.
Acceptable Examples when using chat or any other communication methods:-
Shall we make a sked on 144.388?.
I have QRM, let.s move to 144.218 kHz and start again.
Nothing received, please try later.
Thank you for a nice QSO. Note: only after the QSO has completed on the radio.

Unacceptable Examples when using chat or any other communication methods:-
I need your serial number.
Please repeat all information.
Please confirm , , etc..

Yes, I'll speak to him. Just a momentary lapse.
Not malicious, he worked hard for his intermediate, if you get my drift.
He very enthusiastic so it needs to phrased carefully.

Cheers

Tony

Absolutely no worse than a very well-known UKAC Contester posting on KST that he is on XXX frequency beaming to GM/East etc. Or posting that he is calling CQ on xxx frequency.
Lots of it going on. It's seems to matter less if you are one of the 'big guns' with lots of 'internet friends', rather than an over-enthusiastic twee getting excited about garnering a few points to help his team out.

Bless!

Afternoon John

The rules specifically mention doing it on the DX Cluster and not KST.

If the DX big gun you mention did it on the DX cluster I suspect he would get himself disqualified or get a slap on the wrists and told not to be so naughty !

Even worse would be the piss taking from other "Big guns" for failing to adhere to the rules... ;)

Hello Paul

Totally agreed. However, there isn't really much difference, is there? Both are so closely linked as to be just about the same.
It's a bit daft that you can do it on one and not the other, yet both are visible in KST.

Self spotting on KST or the Cluster shouldn't be allowed either way.

John :D

So do I. I think it's totally ridiculous that you can effectively 'self-spot' on KST but not on the DX Cluster.
In fact, I was incredulous that the VHFCC confirmed that was the case.

But it goes far beyond the VHFCC. They are hand-cuffed by the IARU Region-1 VHF/UHF/Microwaves Committee.
So whatever they have agreed in previous conferences the RSGB must follow.

Fortunately, when I was the RSGB VHF Manager and a member of the IARU R1 Committee, this
agreement in the use of KST was not in place and I would have opposed it. Phew!

Anyway it is in the rules now. And rules are rules. So I must obey them to the letter.
Pathetic ... this isn't what real contesting is about!
