dipole 40 poss 80
steve and chap's im thinking about doing away with my hustler 5btv atm ground mounted on a s/steel pipe 5 foot ish only 2 counterpoise wires for 40 out as thats all i can get out..!
im contemplating a 40mtr dipole poss including 80mtrs what is the best way to sort this out...
i.e. whats the longest dipole i would need or shortest to get a good result
i do have some space not alot but some which means asking the young lass next door to borrow a tree in her garden.. this is 80% possible if not i have very little room
any help plz chaps
cheers regards sean

Re: dipole 40 poss 80
Sean,
Some options are:
1) 80m/40m fan dipole. Length needed about 128ft 2) 80m/40m trap dipole. Length needed about 108ft 3) Doublet fed with ladderline from good tuner. Length needed about 100ft.
I don't know what height you can manage, but for DX on 80m/40m you might be better off with something like an inverted-L

Re: dipole 40 poss 80
Hi Sean If you had the center just below your cobweb what length's could you fit either side as an inverted 'v' ??

Re: dipole 40 poss 80
hello ian an V is not possible mate here not without it looking totally pathetic... prob the most i can get out from the top of the cobwebb mast to this tree is approx ( without getting it measured up ) 70ft at the max..
what i could do with is another rotary dipole like the comet or cushcraft d4 that i let simon have...!
and sell the hustler 5btv as all that is used for is 40mtrs.... wasted really

Re: dipole 40 poss 80
If you've got 70ft and a tree Sean you'd get a trapped inverted L in no probs which could cover top band too. A Western HF 10 or 1/2 G5 with added inductors would cover 80m too but it would be a compromise and a fair bit down on performance compared to a half wave dipole.

Re: dipole 40 poss 80
With a 70 foot run, if you had the height to drop about 20 foot of wire down off each end, the doublet or trap dipole option might fit.
ZS6BKW could also be an option.

Re: dipole 40 poss 80
There are many dipole options for 40m and up in a 70ft run; but he said he also wanted 80m if possible.

Re: dipole 40 poss 80
Not a must tho steve... I need to measure how much room I actually have might be a good ides I suppose. ...
I would be happy with just 40 mtrs probably. ..
Cheers guys any further info..

Re: dipole 40 poss 80
most room i have is 63ft maximum a L is out the question needs to be a dipole for sure.... or a end fed
not bothered about the bands above 7mhz
or if the wire going into the tree branches would not hinder the antenna to much i could scrape about 70ft max
antenna height would prob have to slope towards house from tree to gutter height about 18ft

Re: dipole 40 poss 80
a 63ft horizontal run is plenty for an inverted L or am I missing something? If you can go 25ft 'ish vertical at the tree end you can get a 160m up trapped L in that space. You can always dog leg it at the end too if you're pushed for space.

Re: dipole 40 poss 80
the tree is not in my garden chris its in next doors garden i cannot have a L antenna vertical section in there garden.... not possible
i am ok to run a dipole leg wire to the tree as high as i dare go... hihi

Re: dipole 40 poss 80
Ok sean didn't realise. So it's looking like a dipole mate unless you can put some serious creeping in with the neighbour
