Post More turns on matching transformer
When winding an antenna matching transformer on a ferrite core is there any benefit in using more turns ? The normal arrangement for a 49:1 seems be 2 turns on the primary and 14 on the secondary. Is there any benefit in using more turns. For example 4 and 28 also how about wire size. Does the thickness of the wire used have any effect other than the ability to handle power ?

I remember spending some time learning about transformers at college but it was a long time ago and mostly forgotten.

I have alway matched the turns as per the norm,

Wire quality matters to prevent over heating / saturation of the cores as for power I use 1 for up to 100 watts, 2 up to 400 and 3 for up to 1kw, I never pot them as the free air movement sallows for cooling (i even add a temp strip to check later if they are getting warm/hot.

Quality cores
Quality wire
Quality box and fittings
To me that means as good a quality bit of kit i can make is better and cheaper for me, the one o have now is a 3 core and has been up for well over 5 years and now takes the full Monty when asked too.

Most of the time I run no more than 2/300 watts as that’s all i seem to need.

Regards

Bob.
