Coax for hf
On with moving my shack over next few months and after a bit of advice Currently I use rg 213 to feed both my antennas into the shack Both 20 mtr runs approx
Now at the new location the run is going to be around 40 /50 mtr runs x 2 poss 3
Now is good old 213 OK currently run qrp so don't want a loss ove rthe lengths
Is the 213 good enough or is there a better coax I can use
Cheers Gary

Cheers Gary That will give you about 1.5-2 dB loss at worst, if that is acceptable it will be ok. Will the extra cost to save a little be worth it?

Re: Coax for hf
try the Messi and Paolomi coax , excellent coax. Radioworld or MLS stock it.

Re: Coax for hf
213 will probably be the ideal , or mini 8 for a smaller - easier to handle cable (you'll need plugs too) A bit of loss is not worth worrying about, and both cables are more or less the same performance.

Re: Coax for hf
Great thanks thought I would ask the question As this is far the longest run I have ever had to do
I shall have a look at mini 8 too as have a wood land out the back of the propoty and might have a play with wire antennas

Re: Coax for hf
If you're going to the trouble of burying it, might be worth getting the best you can, so you never need to touch it again. I've got a similar length run which I buried when I arrived here, LDF4-50 hardline which is completely overkill for HF but is handy if I want to put VHF on the end of it, plus it came cheap as it was off an old microwave tower.
RG213 used to be the standard but things have really moved on, I rarely consider it these days, Jamie mentioned Messi and Paolomi coax and that's what I'm using from the LDF4-50 run back into the shack, Ultraflex 7.

Re: Coax for hf
Think it will be run along the fence to be honest Burrying would save me 10 mtrs or so But don't think the xyl would like me lifting the block paving And trenching the lawn

Would have to be brown to go with the fence Not only that I fail to see how would look better, a bit of neatly "black clipped or cleated" black coax will stand out far less than a run of bright green or yellow hose pipe down the fence line over that distance! Also even if you get a length of suitable internal ID "hose pipe" to "easily" shove the eventual chosen coax down, have a lot patience set aside just trying to shove 40 to 50 meters of said coax down that length of floppy and flexible hose pipe in the first place!

Most people round here have green fences, and green plants near them It's very easy to put the coax through the hose, surprised you don't know how!

Oh I do know how, been shoving cables through various sized pipes and tubes my entire working life. I just cant see the point for a run of above ground coax.

Oh I do know how, been shoving cables through various sized pipes and tubes my entire working life. I just cant see the point for a run of above ground coax. Yes, I thought you would have known, but "have a lot patience set aside just trying to shove 40 to 50 meters of said coax down that length of floppy and flexible hose pipe in the first place" did seem to indicate otherwise As for the point of it above ground, from experience can see it is worthwhile. The outer insulation of coax may be relatively tough, however it is no match for gardening tools or being bumped even a wooden table, as even the smallest damage will allow water in and destroy the cable. Plants are expected to grow, and can easily hide the cable, and make damage more lilely. Of course many people will have never suffered damage in this way, but some have, and it is a foreseeable possibility, so if it is intended to be a long term arrangement, I don't see the point in not taking simple precautions, but the only person who can make a qualified decision on that in this case is the OP, knowing all the circumstances.

Re: Coax for hf
The hose has valid points I give you that But would be unsightly so would use a Polypropylene Flexible flexable Conduit Then I could run thee 3 sets through and the twats of cats Next door would have difficulty chewing on it
