We were saddened to receive news that RSGB Past-President Peter Sheppard, G4EJP passed away on 15 August 2020.
Peter served the RSGB as President in 1996 and was made a Life Vice President in 2001. A fuller tribute is in the process of being prepared and an obituary will appear in the October 2020 edition of RadCom. If you knew Peter and would like to add a tribute, please email sk@rsgb.org.uk

The RSGB Legacy Fund, thanks to the generosity of donors, has resources available to encourage and develop amateur radio. The Legacy Committee (a Subcommittee of the RSGB Board) considers proposals for grants to be given to projects from the RSGB Legacy Fund. The criteria for the award of grants was established some years ago and forms the basis of the decision process.

The RSGB is seeking someone preferably with experience of grant applications or experience within the charitable sector to Chair the Legacy Committee.

The number of applications for grants from this sizeable fund has been low recently and the Chair, once appointed, will oversee further communications about the availability of the funds and to encourage more applications. The Terms of Reference for the Legacy Committee is due for review and will be one of the tasks of the new Chair.

Legacy Fund applications are made using a standard form and are considered independently in a timely manner by the Committee members. If discussions are necessary then these take place by teleconference in pursuit of a consensus and a report is presented to the Board for its consideration.

You find out more about the Legacy Committee on the RSGB website.

To register your interest in the role of Legacy Committee Chair, or to ask for an informal discussion, please contact the RSGB Board Chair, Ian Shepherd, G4EVK: chairman@rsgb.org.uk

The Nominations Committee meets regularly, and on request by the Board, to review self-nominations for appointment as Nominated Board Directors or other senior volunteer roles.

The RSGB is seeking someone to fill the important role of Nominations Committee Chair.

As passed by resolution at the 2020 RSGB AGM, the Chair of the Nominations Committee should be a suitably-experienced independent Corporate Member of the RSGB and not a member of the Volunteer Leadership Team (VLT).

In addition to this, the Nominations Committee Chair needs to:

Be comfortable with personal and detailed discussions
Maintain confidentiality within the Committee
Ensure fair adjudication of skills and experience matrices
Be able to present concise and objective outcome summaries to the Board
Provide confidential meeting records
The Nominations Committee maintains a confidential list of possible candidates and their curricula vitae in order to match candidates’ experience and expertise to the needs of the RSGB. The Committee submits to the Board candidates which it suggests should be endorsed as Nominated Directors by the RSGB membership at the RSGB AGM.

Meetings are normally conducted by teleconference.

You find out more about the Nominations Committee on the RSGB website.

To register your interest in the role of Nominations Committee Chair, or to ask for an informal discussion, please contact the RSGB Board Chair, Ian Shepherd, G4EVK: chairman@rsgb.org.uk

The i newspaper has published an article about amateur radio by Rhiannon Williams featuring one of the new generation of radio amateurs, 10-year-old William M7WHB

Interest in amateur radio (also known as ham radio) is booming across the UK, as hundreds of new enthusiasts discover the joy of transmitting signals over specially allocated frequency bands to make new friendships and even communicate with satellites.

One new enthusiast is William, a ten-year-old from near Blackpool. While many were baking sourdough and considering going for a run, William was chatting with new friends thousands of miles away over the radio waves.

The article has an archive picture from 1964 of the impressive Moon Bounce (EME) dish used by Peter Blair G3LTF at Chelmsford in Essex.

Following recent changes to the RSGB Board of Directors, and the continuing effects of the ongoing pandemic, the Society is looking for Members to be considered for possible appointment to the Board.

Members co-opted to the Board of Directors are appointed until the next AGM (April 2021) after which they may seek nomination as a Nominated Director or stand for election as a Director. For Board appointments, some business or related experience is a great asset since the RSGB operates as a registered limited Company and is required to undertake all the legal and governance requirements of any Company. If you have experience of working within a not-for-profit or volunteer-based organisation you are particularly encouraged to apply.

The RSGB maintains a confidential register of those interested in pursuing Director opportunities. Each person is required to complete an experience/skill matrix which is used by the Nominations Committee to match those skills and experience to the needs of the organisation. The Nominations Committee then presents suitable candidates for consideration for appointment to the Board of Directors.

Essential personal attributes for consideration as a Board Director:

Sensitive to the pressures of short-term issues and yet take account of broader, long-term trends
Work within a team in pursuit of common objectives
Knowledgeable about ‚Äėlocal‚Äô issues and yet be aware of potential or actual wider competitive influences
Focused on the commercial needs of the Society’s business while acting responsibly towards employees, business partners and the public
Provide considered but respectful input to business decisions
Maintain adherence to the RSGB ethos and codes of conduct
Available to respond to communications in a timely manner
Relevant specialist skills or general business experience at a senior level
Desirable attributes:

Experience within a voluntary organisation
Knowledge/experience/awareness of some SME business processes such as finance, governance, project evaluation, marketing, publications, retailing
Approachable personality
You can find out more about the RSGB Board on the website:

To register your interest in the role of Board Director, or to ask for an informal discussion, please contact the RSGB Board Chair, Ian Shepherd, G4EVK: chairman@rsgb.org.uk

It is with regret that we announce that Bobby Wadley, MI0RYL is stepping down from her position as RSGB Awards Manager.

Bobby bought huge energy and enthusiasm to this role. Her contribution was valued and appreciated by all that worked with her and she will be missed.

During the online RSGB Convention for 2020, you will be able to enjoy some excellent lectures. On Saturday the 10th of October, the RSGB will be putting on two streams online for everyone to enjoy. In An introduction to… we will have a pictorial introduction to data modes by Mike Richards, G4WNC.

He will guide viewers through the basics of data modes operation, explaining the commonly used terms and the development of the modes in general use today. In the Learn more about… stream, Alwyn Seeds, G8DOH will look at VHF/UHF radios for contesting and DXing. The talk will discuss the important specifications for high performance VHF and UHF radios and how these can most easily be achieved. For transmitters, the importance of achieving low radiated noise will be explained. The talk will be illustrated with measurements for a variety of radios based on both conventional and software defined radio design approaches. You can find out more at www.rsgb.org.uk/convention.

Are you heading for university this year? Several students who passed their remote-invigilation amateur radio exams are off to university in the next few weeks.

If you would like to let others know which Uni you are attending, perhaps with the aim of setting up an amateur radio club, send your name, email and university to radcom@rsgb.org.uk and we’ll print the list in RadCom. UK University Amateur Radio also aims to help co-ordinate university clubs, see ukuar.org.

The RSGB Examinations Standards Committee (ESC) report covering 2019 is now available for anyone to download

The report contains statistics for the both the RSGB amateur radio exams and the Air Cadets Organisation (ACO) exam which Ofcom considers to be equivalent to the RSGB Foundation.

Ofcom has been concerned about the participation of women in amateur radio and STEM disciplines. They requested the ESC to publish figures for the number of women taking the exams. Unfortunately the results are disappointing with only 9.9% of all exams being taken by women.

Download the ESC report from

We think alike, I was about to ask "How many of the women percentage stated actually biologically qualify for the title?" :D
