Post Ofcom database of callsigns Not Available for issue
Short calls are available for those radio amateurs who pass Intermediate or Advanced exams but for Advanced it may not be clear which short G2 or G3 calls are available

The QRZ.com site shows that one of the short calls issued recently was G2NV on August 6, 2019. This call was originally issued around 1920 but it ceased being renewed in the 1960's. Ofcom's 2016 database had showed it was unallocated so available for issue.

Details of how to apply for a short Full callsign are at

Ofcom release database of Amateur Radio Call Signs
Following a Freedom of Information request by Roger Howell, Ofcom made their database of amateur radio call signs available for download

The database, released as a spreadsheet containing 141,296 rows, shows the status of UK amateur call signs as at August 12, 2019.

It can be useful for people wanting to apply for a specific call sign as it shows all those calls which are not available.

Ofcom clarified the meaning of their call sign status field e.g. 'Reserved' means that the callsign has been used within the past two years, although it is no longer, and is in the process of ‘cooling down’. It is therefore not currently available for assignment to anyone else, but operators will be able to apply for it again after the two-year period has expired.

Call signs with two trailing letters are not available for Foundation and Intermediate stations. These stations must therefore have a call sign with three trailing letters. We are aware that a handful of Intermediate stations have inadvertently been assigned call signs with only two trailing letters. This was aberrant though we shall not require those licensees to relinquish these call signs and replace them with a call sign with three trailing letters.

Its the "forbidden ones" make me smile the most!
Some maybe obvious by their letters alone, and what they can read as if your mind wonders that way, but many others seemingly have no
group of letters connotations you can make out of them, so why are they "forbidden" from being reallocated?
To be honest this whole trawled out and reissued "desired old call signs" lark, just smacks of "look at me" personal car number plate bull shit to me!
Sorry, but that's how I see it!

Wonder if G5RV has been or will ever be?

Well it has, and is a club call sign apparently, fair enough, at least its not just a vanity seeking call sign individual!

In my opinion the old callsigns should be left alone, makes me puke that people cream over gaining them when in fact they were earned under written exams that most wouldn't pass today and it's a insult to those that originally earned it.
Rant over if it makes them happy crack on wgaf.
