Post Northern Ireland WAB Committee Member helps rescue
Northern Ireland WAB Committee Member helps rescue injured motorcyclist in Wales
On 30th June, WAB Committee Member, Esther Harper, GI0AZA was engaged in a Worked All Britain activation of a rare square in Northern Ireland on 40m, when she picked up a 'Mayday' call from Richard Haynes, MW6RBH/M. He had come across an injured motorcyclist in an area of North Wales where there was no mobile phone signal.
Esther called 999 and asked for air ambulance Wales - which she says is a bit odd for their 999 in NI! They put her through and she gave them the grid reference. The operator said she had never had this before. Esther had to go back and get nearest town details from Richard and when the air ambulance control heard her talking to him, they realised that this was genuine. The air ambulance was dispatched, and the motorcyclist lifted out.
This truly was in the spirit of the WAB motto “To assist others”.

Post Re: Northern Ireland UPDATE
NI radio ham to rescue
The Belfast Telegraph reports how amateur radio enthusiast Esther Harper GI0AZA from Co Londonderry helped rescue a man more than 300 miles away in Wales
The newspaper says:
Dungiven couple Esther Harper [GI0AZA] and her husband Ivan Evans [GI0AZB] were in Co Fermanagh near the border town of Belcoo yesterday lunchtime when Esther received a mayday call.

Fellow radio ham Richard Haynes [MW6RBH] had stumbled across what he believed to be an injured motorist in the county of Ceredigion.

The story was reported on Twitter by Alana Harper a niece of Esther living in New Zealand, she tweeted:

How’s this for the chain of survival? My aunt (@eejaymm) receives a Mayday call via amateur radio network for an injured person in Wales (no mobile reception), just by chance another amateur radio user transmitting nearby

@eejaymm alerts Welsh ambulance services via NI Ambulance services (good old 999) who task @air_ambulance to the injured party.... bloody impressive if you ask me!

Well done to all, just shows how effective amateurs can be in communication.

Some may play it down, but a possible saving of a life is not a small thing.

Well done all and it just goes to show how radio is invaluable, I've been on the strata in a Landy and it's lovely but no place to be stranded with a broken bone.

Well done indeed, not many of us get to experience that "Yellow Jack" moment! :)
For those scratching their heads, watch or listen to the Tony Hancock sketch, "The Radio Ham"! ;)
