Post New Start
Hi all, I am intending to pick up an Icom 2820 tomorrow. I am new to this lark of Dstar.

I will need a hot spot as there are very few repeaters here that I can reach.

Has anyone got any recommendations and links as to where and what I will need.
Sorry I should have said I want the hot spot for 2 meters and 70 cms

Regards Chris

Hi Chris,

It depends on how your doing to run your hotspot.

Are you talking about a hotspot that will just be accessed from in and around your home or one that will give coverage of your local area whilst your out /p or /m ?

You see I have both for different reasons. I have a DV-Mega dual band / Raspberry Pi2 based hotspot that runs about 100mw. I take it with me and have it running in the caravan once we are on site so I can play radio whilst I am away. I access it using an ID51e on its lowest power setting (again milliwatts) and this gives me access /p both in the caravan and whilst dog walking around the site. The DV-Mega is then linked to the internet via a wifi link to my iPhone.

Completely separately, I have setup a personal hotspot that I can access all over my home town which is my work area day in day out and which is generally patchy for D-Star repeaters. That consists of a DV-Mega GMSK modem linked to a Raspberry Pi which links via wifi to my home internet router. The GMSK Modem is linked via cable to the 9k6 data port on an FT-7900 running 5w into a dual band collinear on the roof. So whilst i am out /m I can access the hotspot by transmitting on my IC-5100e, and that signal is received by the 7900.

So you need to give us a clearer idea of what it is your looking to setup mate.

Hi yes I may have been vague with my request. I would like something to have access around my home but something that can be taken /m/p. It will be mostly at home in a base station situation. I will be connecting it to an Icom 2820 should the purchase go according to plans tomorrow. I have been told its around £190 to have such a device but if tats the cost then that's it.

Hi Chris,

It sounds like the DV-Mega Dual Band RPiv2 is what you need. As paddy said, contact Karl and he can do you a ready built unit, setup ready to use.

He has a Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/groups/892230700808085/
and a website at http://www.dvmega.co.uk
You will also find loads of info at http://www.dv-mega.com

I have no connection with the business, just a satisfied customer ;-)

I will not even try that one Paddy, she is still a sly old fox when it comes to new stuff appearing in the shack or the garage. Heading off soon to try radio bartering. I will let you know how I get on.

Thanks to all who replied to my post.

Well that's me back with the Icom 2820. I must say it seems nice. I think I am going to opt for the Dv-mega with Raspberry pi. Now all I have to do is make sure the wife does not check the bank account for a wee while.

Not if it is locked to your call sign to prevent 3rd party use.

Clearly the G8 has no idea what he is talking about.
I have an NOV for my gateway and I only require it because I allow others to use it .

I'm sure others would like clarification on this. I certainly do.
OK, if I was to run my hotspot restricted to myself only, are there any restrictions on o/p power and antenna gain? My NOV states 2W ERP.
