Post who uses an RTL dongle for SDR?
ive just got the rtl 820t2 dongle and was hoping to use irt as an sdr using the IF output of my ts-870 which is 8.83Mhz

ive been trying to get it working but no matter what i do i cant get it to work?

is it to do with the if output being so low and out of the range of the dongle? ive done similar in the past with a ft-1000d and FCD pro +

am i wasting me time?

Looking at the spec of that dongle Ricky, it says 24 MHz to 1.7 GHz, so 8.83Mhz might be pushing it a bit.

A FUNcube+ would cover it from 150Khz to 1.9Ghz but it's much more expensive.

It has an IF at 70Mhz odd... couldn't you tap into that ? (which the dongle could accept)

Post Re: who uses an RTL dongle for SDR?
I have used the RTL dongle quite extensively for ham radio listening and as a spectrum analyser for work.
There is lots of reading on the net, these things are great. There are some Russian DLL files about that allow it to work lower, I have had mine working reasonably successfully on 40m. If you bypass the tuner chip, I believe it will work lower, with obvious lack of selectivity, which is of course, it's Achilles heel anyway.
Many basic SDRs out there have these at their core, with additional circuitry, especially front end.
I recommend everyone to have a go with one, as they are beer money items, you will be pleasantly surprised.
If in any doubt go onto the hack green SDR, it's bult with RTL dongles.

Anyone used one of these? It should feel able to work with my ts-870 if at 8.83 MHz
