Just go with the flow . I wouldn't let it stop you .. Call CQ and go for it , you have the basics , name,qth,rig,power,ant , but you don't have to get that across first exchange ,break it up . handing back over just say " ok john HW CPI BTU" you don't have to go through the arse ache of both calls, that just makes it boring and long winded .

The thing with code is many people new to it feel there is some sort of special way of doing it , there isn't really ,99.9% of all my qso's were as if I were talking to someone face to face except for the obvious code abbreviations etc . There are no "rules" your conversing and iv never done this both calls at the end of my bit to hand over mid qso even on long qso's ,you wouldn't introduce yourself again mid conversation in real life .. If someone wants to tail end your qso or speak to you when you are finished they will hear your call when you sign off the qso ( that's just my way) ..

There is no different way of doing it compared to SSB except your using a key and abbreviations for most words unless you start ragchewing then you will have to use the word as you would spell it ,I used to chat to a guy who was into fishing same as me so those qso's we had to spell a lot of the words properly ..

Used all the time in the merchant, especially working Portishead/GKA at Christmas :shock: .

Another thing worth knowing is a few greetings in foreign languages. If I ever worked Norddeich/DAN I always used 'GT' (guten tag). For Athens/SVA it was 'KLM' (kalimera)

Like Billy says, just relax.
Morseworld isn't as formal as many think. I've never heard anybody being 'picked up' for anything (apart from QRM/DQRM) and there is no set-in-concrete way of doing it.

Recreational amateur morse is not as strict as old professional message-handling morse.

The best place to dip your toe is the upper parts of the 40m and 80m bands, say in the 15kHz or so just below the PSKers. This is where the QRPers, FISTS and straight-keyers tend to lurk, and it's a bit less hell-for-leather then the more DX-orientated sections lower down.

I've worked a lot of people here who are on their first few nervous QSOs.

Thanks to all who replied with suggestions.

This evening I've had a go a CW for the first time in years. To cut the stress levels down I programmed a few canned messages in my memory keyer and had CW Skimmer running in the background just in case.

I've ended up having 6 CW QSOs on 20, 30 and 40m replying to CQ calls. I won't call CQ yet as that's probably where I went wrong back in 1979 when the ink was still wet on my license.

The most interesting QSO was RW1AI/MM who after an internet search I found was on the icebreaker Academik Federov in the Baltic Sea en-route from Antarctica to St Petersberg.

I found I could read most of the CW by ear up to 22 wpm (according to CW Skimmer) and I could beat it for reading in the noise which is gratifying as I'm 3 parts deaf.

The best thing is I've had a lot of fun and I'll carry on with it and get the reading levels back and practice sending again. Who knows someday I might even call CQ again!

Nice one , I need to get back on the air .. You will find as you carry on the "nerves" will go , the more you relax into it the easier it will get , one huge advantage is NOT to worry about missing anything and get out the mind set that you need to catch everything character for character first time IMO this can hold people back .

If you have jobs to do in the shack leave the radio on and do whatever your doing and listen whilst doing whatever your doing , this will have zero stress and will ( or can) condition your brain to listen and take in info whilst not actually sat concentrating on just the task of trying to decode , my radio was on constantly in the downstairs back room and I could hear it in other rooms so I would listen to qso's while I was watching tv or making food or whatever without thinking about it and without it effecting what I was doing .

it sounds daft but a "newbie" trying to de code stuff AND trying to write down what they have heard can be system overload as daft as that may sound , I never wrote anything down except name,qth ,rst and call from day 1 ..

crack on and in no time you will be banging away thinking why didn't I do this sooner ..

Well done Chris for getting back into it, a couple of local Ham friends G3/G4 were considering the same, I hope they do. I keep trying to edge them into CW again.

Use me as an example if it helps.

I've set myself a target of at least one CW QSO per day. I've only missed one day so far due to a family get-together. My reading speed is coming back. I've taken the advice to only write down the callsign, name and report. That's taken a lot of the stress out for me and I'm reading a lot of it in my head already.

Best thing is I'm having fun!

Nice one . Writing everything down really held me back when I was learning , I figured once I had his name and call it didn't matter if I didn't get everything else and it didn't , in fact not worrying actually helped me read it better as the "stress" of fluffing it went . Much like lots of things people try learning the more the nerves go the better we can do it more often than not ...

Another big learning method I used was downloading text to morse on my MP3 player about my other interests ( in my case fishing and books re Jack the Ripper) and even "read" Treasure Island on it over a few month while I was driving , again making no effort to try and read it all and it just went in ...

I must get another set up and get back on ....
