There has always been a ladder! David you should know that being an early member! we are truly sorry about the lack of the KeyNote magazine, Graham the editor has been unwell for sometime and we are all volunteers, it so hard to get anyone to step up, its very easy to criticize we have to try and balance the magazine for all, some love kit building others love old kit, others aerials, Robert M0BPT is going to step in to the editors position so hopefully we should see a mag soon, John M0CDL Fists..

FISTS doesnt have to be all contests (which it isnt) if people are on air. Most nights i call cq on 80 and 40 FISTS CoA and get no takers. Sevreal times ive met paul, G4LNA, but few others. Last night the same, even 5262 was empty. The only qso i got was a CT on topband.

FISTS is whatwe make it. This conversation should have been on 7028 or 3558!

There was A ladder, yes, but over the years a lot more have appeared. At the outset, activity events resulted in a collection of members comments being collated & commented on by Geo. Nowadays a table of results appears. The instant you do that then all the QSOs get very short. In the early years I've spent an entire activity evening in one QSO.

I daresay the current situation is driven by members request but I doubt very much that it is what Geo intended.

As the new FISTS activities manager I am trying to create a non contest ethos so would appreciate a proper discussion on what people want. I have left the ladder as it has become because it does seem very popular amongst those who enjoy that sort of things. I've added a few activities which encourage long qso. I hope you approve

David

Quoting myself (maybe the first sign of madness).

"Yes, it does seem to have drifted a bit. I joined fists as an on-air morse social club, so I could monitor / join in the almost permanent loose drop-in net which lurked around the '58s. Also an excuse to go to any rallies with a fists stand, to put faces to callsigns. I used to join in some 'activity nights', but likewise any form of competitive radio - and the results - just leave me stone cold."

All power to you and good luck. I suppose I'll have to pay my subs now.
Spread things out over weekday evenings. I know some people will say "I can't make Mondays", but an even bigger number of people don't bother switching on at all at weekends. :)

You should have a look at the new 'Day Hopper' event then: it fits your bill exactly.

Splendid.

I wonder if we could add a little Oomph to the 'Encouraging Newcomers' aspect of Fists.
I know that it is already in the Fists 'rules of the road' that they should slow down to any speed; but how about a specific short 'watch period' every week where Fists will listen specifically for absolute beginners?

No matter how slow or nervous; have a go. - your first Morse QSO.

Sounds like a good idea, base it on the old ships watch periods like this PDF Quarter past and Quarter to the hour, or even every 15 minutes if half hour is too long.

I can certainly add that activity in, yes. I'll get it added to start in January.

That's what I had in mind. Maybe a ten minute watch once a night/week, so people can pour a stiff one and gather up a bit of 'bottle', without fear of some speed demon showing-off when he comes back. :)
