There is no best way, because we all learn in different ways, what it easy for one person isn't necessarily easy for another, it's just a case of trying different methods to find the one that suits.

Age has a lot to do with it as well, I learnt mine at quite a young age with a friend listening to the slow morse transmissions on Top Band from the local amateur, we used to treat it as a bit of competition to see who could copy the most, my friend was actually better than me, this was long before I got my ticket. I found that quite good as you has someone else who had the same interest and could work together. Is there a local club that run morse practice sessions? You might find that beneficial.

As you get older it will probably take longer, just be patient with yourself.

I downloaded an iphone app and used it whenever I had time and having it on the phone meant It was always in my pocket. If you cant find an app just download some cw mp3's amd listen to them. Also start off at a decent character semd speed but longer spacing makes it easier in the long run.

I started off the traditional way.. slow with long gaps, but this is absolutely the wrong way IMHO... I always think of the film "Firefox"... and the quote "you must think in Russian, you cannot think in English and translate"
Which is exactly what you get into the habit of doing... hearing dits and dahs - then using a mental look up table. You need to train your brain to hear letters/words, so start off listening to code faster than are comfortable with and pick out the odd letter... then keep adding letters !
Worked for me!

Have to agree , you need a speed fast enough for your brain to hear the "tune" of a letter rather than hearing the dits and dahs ..There is no need whatsoever to ever need to know how a morse character is written .
