Re: Running coax underground ?
Whatever you decide upon, abandon all hope of making it water tight... Make sure the pipe has plenty of drainage... or the coax WILL end up sitting in water. I like the idea of copper... adds to your earth !

Re: Running coax underground ?
Okay cheers Dave conduit ordered.trench dug out. Will thread the coax down the conduit and seal both ends so that water does not get into the pipe.
Would you recommend making small holes along the length off the conduit to let any moisture out or not ? Plan to wrap the coax itself with self emalgamating tape before it's put within conduit.

Re: Running coax underground ?
I wouldn't bother wrapping the coax with amalgamating tape John but I would spring for a run of 213 or Westflex instead of the rg58, much more manly!
As for sealing the ends of the conduit that's where I would probably use the amalgamating tape but definitely wouldn't puncture the conduit as it would fill up quicker with ground water than it ever would with condensation, long term it might pay to draw the coax back out to check for water ingress but the SWR meter will give an idea if there's anything untoward happening.
Cheers, Dave.

Re: Running coax underground ?
All that effort for rg58 Tony showed the best idea other than that just bury the stuff all this sheathing will create issues. All I would do is remember where I had laid it and probably pull it up every 6-8 years to replace.

Re: Running coax underground ?
The way I do it ensures the coax is dry, the majority of the time, can't accidentally be dug through, can be easily replaced and can cope with multiple runs. At the moment it has three runs of 1/2" hardline, one of 3/8" hardline, one of UR67, rotator cable and a couple of CCTV feeds. There's still room for several more. It just seemed the safest, and most convenient, option to me.
Cheers
Tony

Re: Running coax underground ?
When I moved to this QTH, over 30 years ago I buried a length of green garden hose in the back garden, from the house to the fence at the bottom of the garden. I ran a length of RG213 inside it. Each end came up ~12 inches above the surface and were packed with putty and plenty of self amalgamating tape to form a water barrier. It has not given any problems. However in the last couple of years I have noticed that the cable has become slightly lossy at HF. I was going to replace it but as I only use this to feed an LF antenna it really makes precious little difference so it will probably still be there when I fall off my perch !!!.
Don't be afraid to bury co-ax, if you take sensible precautions it should last a long time...
Oh and the garden hose needn't be green - or maybe that's why its lasted so long...

+1 No need to over-complicate it: wait until it's wet (ideally winter), use an edging tool to make a small V-trench in your grass a few inches deep, drop the coax in, make a note of where you put it (or better, take a photo) and then close it up by pushing the grass back together with your feet. In a few months you won't know it's there. Did this with 100ft run over 10 years ago and it's still functioning fine. If you over-engineer it, chances are the cost and time you took to do that will be more than a replacement run of coax.

Re: Running coax underground ?
I run my coax rotator cable in plastic drain pipe buried under my lawn. I have used this method for years with good results.
