Post Local newspapers looking for stories
July and August are traditionally slack months for news and so represent an opportunity for radio amateurs to get media coverage

If you want the general public to know about amateur radio and your local club then July and August are the easiest times to get a story in the local press.

Amateur radio clubs have successfully used local media to get publicity for special events, training courses or simply an upcoming talk at the club. Publicity in local newspapers can help attract newcomers and boost club membership.

Care should naturally be taken when emailing press releases to local newspapers. It has been known for a club to generate a press release entirely in upper case characters, that is probably the best way to ensure it is consigned immediately to the bin.

Spelling errors in submitted text clearly look sloppy but these days the use of spell checkers can easily take care of that.

Possibly the most important thing to remember when communicating with the local press is to use Plain English. Radio amateurs can develop a habit of talking about their hobby using Q-Codes and jargon completely forgetting that nobody else has a clue what they are talking about.

Finally don't forget to provide contact details and meeting location.
Say when and where your club meet (quoting a postcode is handy for SatNavs) and if possible give a contact telephone number or email so that people wishing to find out more can do so.
