Post Well I have NO wish to be free of this hobby.
Not sure what being "free" of a hobby means, however, today was pure joy for me. The wife's away for a few days so it was rig in a ruck sack, dog in the car and off I went. First stop, a woodland. Hour and a half walk for fido then I found a tree and chucked my wire up. Had a half hour chat with Hans, DJ8CZ on the key in the sun. He was /p, same as me, he was in a forest and I was basking in Wiltshire grassland. Luvly.

Home for a cuppa after a further walk for fido and me then out again this evening for a walk with the old dogs (fido is a youngster). Found another tree, hoisted the doublet up and had another half hour with Alan, MW0BGL. His morse is very slow so I struggle a bit but it works and we had a nice chat. My noise floor was zero but he struggled with noise and QSB (I had between 5 and 10 watts). Again, basking in the glorious Wiltshire sunshine (YSMV  ).

I accept that I am one of the bad guys - a grumpy old know it all G4 with a chip on his shoulder about people getting access to HF without Morse and I stick pins in M3, M6 and 2E0 effigies all night long between killing cats with a hammer and yelling obscenities using 2kw of SSB...but still, bloomin good fun!! And I won't go into the merits of what you get out is what you put in, but I'm getting a heck of a lot out!

I sincerely hope you all had a good day in this sunshine as well.

David

Yes, what sunshine.
We have hardly had a break in the rain for nearly three weeks, and those breaks have been so short the ground had not dried at all.

I think it is summer, as the rain is a bit warmer.

It has been the same for years now in that the best weather is during the end of the summer term, before the holidays starts :(

Why would anyone voluntarily take part in a hobby they want to be free from?

I read it as someone else wants him to be free of it. None in my family understand the attraction of the hobby and I'm quite sure would rather I did the gardening instead!

Been nice up here, sunny most days and even got time to get the 17 ele 2m tonna finally up. All I need is someone to work.

I don't really 'get' the idea of wanting to break free of Amateur Radio. It's not like getting divorced or leaving the priesthood ... you just stop doing it.

I don't introduce myself as a Radio Ham. I just say that one of my hobbies is 'farting about with old radios' and leave it at that. If pushed, I'll also mention that I have a licence from the Government, and I had to pass an exam to get it.

Being interested in radio doesn't mean that you have to 'conform' completely and become a caricature 'Radio Ham'. All that the licence does is authorize you to transmit and experiment on a certain set of frequencies. It doesn't say that you have to suddenly start speaking in 'Q' codes and saying 'Fine Business Old Man' and 'HI'.

To me: Radio is just a method of getting Morse Code from one place to another, just as Marconi intended. So I suppose that makes me 'a Telegraphist'. So my hobby is 'Amateur Telegraphy'.
